If you want to activate a new Apple iPhone on the Verizon network and don’t want Verizon personnel to help you complete the activation, you can do so relatively easily on the iOS device itself. Generally, you’ll be prompted to activate the phone when you power it on, but if you don’t have a cellular connection, you can still activate the phone with a Wi-Fi connection or a computer with Apple iTunes installed.
Activate Your iOS Device
If you buy a new iPhone or any other type of cellphone, you generally must activate it before you can use it on your carrier’s network. An iOS device handles much of the activation process, so you can usually have Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile or Sprint activate your phone by pressing a few buttons on the device.
Before you do so, if you already have a phone using the same phone number, back up your data and turn off the old phone. You can back up your data using iTunes or Apple’s iCloud, Verizon’s cloud storage or a third-party data storage tool such as Dropbox or Google Drive. Make sure to turn off the old phone before activating the new phone so the network is not confused.
When you turn on the phone for the first time, you’ll be asked to choose basic options like your language and country. If you’re already using another iOS device, you can use iOS Quick Start to synchronize your data and iPhone settings from one device to the other. Otherwise, you can set up your data manually and import any cloud data you may have saved.
Local telephone numbers obtained from Verizon’s Directory Assistance can be automatically dialed. For an additional charge, you can usually press 1 any time after the requested number has been announced to automatically dial the number.
You’ll be prompted to activate your phone using your Wi-Fi or a cellular connection. Choose the cellular network if you have it. If you don’t have good reception but do have Wi-Fi, that’s an option as well. Follow the instructions on the phone, and your phone should soon be activated.
If It Won’t Activate
If your phone won’t activate itself normally, you can try to activate it with a computer with iTunes. Open iTunes on a Microsoft Windows or Apple macOS computer and install any updates to the software you’re prompted to install. Make sure the SIM card is properly installed in your phone. If you’re not sure how to do this, look at any documentation that came with the phone or contact Verizon or Apple.
Connect the iPhone to the computer using the cable that came in the box with the phone. You should be prompted in iTunes to activate the phone. Once you do so, it will give you the option to load any backed-up data or set up the phone as new.
If the phone doesn’t activate even with iTunes, contact Verizon or Apple for help.
